Historically, lingerie was used for purely practical reasons like hygiene, altering body shape and modesty. In the 1960’s, many lingerie companies began glamourizing their products and pushing the sexual suggestiveness of lingerie.
The proper fitting of bras became popular in the 90’s, and today there are many styles and cuts of bras engineered to fit all body types. Many lingerie companies offer a wide selection of products to choose from.
Babydolls
One of the most popular lingerie staples is called the babydoll. A babydoll is essentially a short version of a nightgown or a negligee. Babydolls come in wide range of fabrics and styles, and almost no two styles are the same. Babydolls are not intended to be worn under clothing, but rather to be displayed while worn in the bedroom.
Corsets
Corsets are also a very popular piece of women’s lingerie. Corsets are short fitted bodices that help to shape the torso into an hourglass shape. Corsets are also made from many different types of fabric, and almost all types of corsets have a unique design. The majority of corsets lace up the back, giving the buyer the ability to size the corset as needed.
Bustiers
A bustier is very similar to the corset, except that while shaping the torso the bustier also lifts the breasts and oftentimes the bustiers are not adjustable like the corset. Bustiers work well under many sleeveless dresses for the best breast support without bra lines.
Camisoles
A camisole, commonly known as a cami, is also a popular lingerie piece. Camisoles are sleeveless and often tight fitting, and can be worn under almost anything. Camisoles are often comfortable garments, and require little or no special washing directions.
Chemise
A chemise is also like a sleeveless undershirt, but unlike the camisole it is loose fitting. Chemises can be made from any type of material, like cotton or silk.
Teddie
Teddies are the most popular lingerie item on the market today. When you think of sexy lingerie, teddies are one of the first things that come to mind. A teddy is a bodysuit piece and panties all in one. Teddies are designed to be loose and easily removable, and they are also designed to accentuate the wearer’s figure. There are many different styles and manufacturer’s of teddies in the lingerie market today.
Bodystockings
Bodystockings are also a popular piece of lingerie. A bodystocking is a tight fitting unitard, designed to show off the wearer’s body. The great majority of bodystockings are made from sheer material, and are not intended to be worn in public.
Stockings
Stockings have also made themselves fixtures in today’s lingerie market. Stockings are classic and timeless, and come in all colors, sizes and styles.
Gowns and Robes
Gowns and robes are classically sexy pieces of lingerie. Gowns and robes have been around as lingerie for a very long time. Gowns and robes can be made from just about any material and can be short, long or in between. There are many different designs and styles of gowns and robes on the market today.
Panties
Panties are the essential foundation of lingerie. With designers making comfort and style more obtainable, there are many options with panties nowadays. From thongs to boy-cut to even full cut panties, there are fits for all different ages, styles and functions. Â
